Gender Equality

Gender Equality in Academic Staff Development

At Germany universites, many approaches of staff development based on standards of fairness, transparency and quality assurance had originally been initiated by members of equal opportunity officies – and they are still today. Guidelines or charters on appointment procedures for research positions and professorships, support measures like mentoring

and coaching or leadership trainings can be named as examples.

The committee „Gender Equality in Staff Development at Higher Education Institutions“ of The Federal Conference of Gender Equality Officers in Higher Education in Germany (BukoF) is developing ideas on staff development based on the principle of gender equality. With its specific expertise it is involved in current debates on higher education politics, e.g. at German Rectors' Conference (HRK) or The German Council of Science and Humanities (WR).

The committee developed two position papers on gender equality in staff development - a short (in German) and a long version (in German) - which are the building blocks of its work. In March 2014, the committee organized a symposium on the topic. A presentation by Prof. Dr. Claudia Peu, TUM School of Management, focused on the question how employee selection processes at higher education institutions that can support gender equality. It can be downloaded here (in German).
